Learn more about what we offer at ABC Family Therapy!
Active Sessions take traditional psychotherapy and/or
life coaching to a new level. Our active sessions include, walking and hiking sessions, and the focus is much the same as a traditional session.
Walking sessions: 50 minutes.
Hiking sessions: approx. 2 hours
Note: physical fitness requirements differ for any activity and you must assess your readiness for these activities. We can discuss any concerns at any time.
For more information regarding Active Sessions, see the Article in Counseling Today or check out the ABC Family Therapy BLOG!
These sessions are NOT outfitted trips, rather we utilize the outdoors as a setting for openness. If you are seeking a more adventurous trek, we can provide a customized trek that we facilitate through an outfitter (depending on requirement).
Weekly group therapeutic adventure group that meets together to have fun, work
through personal and group based tasks, and process these with a Licensed Professional Counselor (DB Palmer) and adventure leaders.
We work on a range of issues, and primarily are a fit for students who are:
-beginning to act out in class, but not in trouble… yet.
-having trouble paying attention in class.
-having a hard time with boundaries
and behavior at home or in class.
-Good kids who need some work in
order to get back on track.
ABC Adventure Groups are led by DB Palmer and may be joined by one of our high-energy college-level interns in any group beyond 5 participants. Groups are capped at 9 participants.

After years in the field, we have developed the first program of its kind.
Adventure- Based Counseling Trek + Distance Coaching for clients anywhere!
OVERVIEW
ABC Family Therapy's "eVenture Therapy" program offers a cutting edge program at a fraction of the cost by eliminating the overhead, mass of program staff, team of mid-level managers, corporate owners, and connects the client to the clinician/coach* in a way that was previously not possible, using adventure AND e-technologies.
MISSION
1- To bring families together, sharing faith and fellowship, walking simply and humbly through the wilderness. We seek peace, compassion, and life-change.
2- To provide Adventure Based Interventions to address the gap in individual, couples, and family service interventions and supports, including: psychotherapy, pastoral counseling, professional family life coaching, and custom designed services.
3- To address the disparity between those who need Adventure Based Interventions and those who can afford it.
MODEL
eVenture Therapy Model
Adventure + Client + Clinician/Coach*
Individuals, Couples, Families, & Groups
METHOD
1) 4-7 day Adventure Assessment and Trek
2) Weekly Counseling* or Life Coaching (depending upon request & state)
3 months or more.
3) Wrap-up Adventure Trek (optional)
COST
The single-largest barrier to wilderness and adventure-based therapies is due to cost (in our experience). eVenture Therapy was designed specifically to address the disparity of cost v need. eVenture Therapy is significantly less expensive than any other privately paid adventure/wilderness therapy program.
*Additional Details:
-Professional Counseling is offered during ALL Adventure Treks.
-*Professional Couseling for Weekly Counseling is for WA and AK residents only.
-Family Life Coaching may be an option, regardless of where you live, but we may refer to another provider if needed or more appropriate.

Distance Credentialed Counselor, recognized by the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC) and Center for Credentialing & Education (CCE).
*NOTE: I do not offer psychotherapy or counseling via distance technology, UNLESS you live in Alaska or Washington State. I may consider licensing in other states, if sufficient client need exists.
Specialty areas:
I do work with other issues, so do check if these aren't your particular concern. In my experience, I've worked in many settings with a full range of clinical concerns.
NOTE: Due to my schedule requirements as Director of Counseling & Wellness at Alaska Pacific University, workshop presentations, and dissertation research; I offer only a very limited office practice. Please contact me to see if I have room in my schedule. I WILL work to accommodate you, if I can.
For practitioners, facilities, programs, and students within the greater counseling psychology
field, we offer regular trainings for both ABC and Active Sessions work.
NOTE: Following the recent Counseling Today article featuring DB Palmer of ABC Family Therapy, we have received a large number of requests for training. In order to meet this need, we are paying careful attention to our current work-loads and capabilities.
We hope to hear from you and we'll set up trainings as soon as we can.
Send us an email regarding your level of interest, geographical area, and level of experience. THANKS!
All services are offered via private payment which is due prior to the session. I can assist you with documentation for billing insurance. Insurance may, or may not, reimburse your cost.
ABC Family Therapy exists to provide counseling via adventure based counseling sessions, workshops, weekend and week-long adventure sessions; as well as more 'traditional' counseling sessions and eVenture Therapy psychotherapy or life-coaching.
DB provides Educational Consulting for families seeking educational placements for teens in need of: college prep academies, boarding schools, therapeutic boarding schools, residential treatment, and wilderness therapy.
Please note: While DB Palmer is the Director of Counseling & Wellness at Alaska Pacific University, ABC Family Therapy is not affiliated with Alaska Pacific University. Both programs operate autonomously of one another. Neither program assumes any liability, programming, or responsibility for the other.
